This course is intended for current or aspiring post-14 teachers, tutors, trainers, lecturers, and instructors who can access substantial teaching practice in an education or training setting.

Course requirements

OTHM requires learners to meet specific entry and suitability requirements, including subject-level knowledge, access to teaching practice, minimum core skills, age, and English language competence where applicable.

  • Hold a relevant vocational and/or academic qualification at least one level above that of the learners taught, ideally with a minimum Level 3 qualification in the learner’s own specialist area; have access to 100 teaching practice hours with full responsibility for planning, delivering, and assessing provision.

  • Meet minimum core requirements in literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT; be aged 19 or over at the start of the course; communicate clearly enough to meet training demands; have no criminal background preventing work with young people or vulnerable adults; and provide evidence of English competency if required.

Assessments

All units are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM. The qualification is assessed through coursework and professional practice evidence, and teaching simulation is not permitted.

Progression

Successful completion supports both professional and academic progression. OTHM states that accredited learners may progress toward QTLS through professional formation and may also enter relevant degree top-up programmes with advanced standing.
