Who should attend

This qualification is suitable for adults who want to develop specialist knowledge and techniques for teaching lip-reading, especially those with relevant vocational, academic, or professional experience.

  • Learners aged 19 and above

  • Individuals who want to become effective teachers of lip-reading

  • Teachers or trainers working in relevant educational contexts

  • Practitioners with a relevant vocational or academic qualification

  • Mature learners over 21 with relevant experience, subject to centre approval

  • Those seeking roles requiring specialist lip-reading knowledge and techniques

Course requirements

Learners must meet OTHM entry requirements before registration. Centres may also require evidence of English language competence where applicable.

  • Learners should be aged 19 or above, hold GCSE English Language at Level 9-4 or equivalent, have good unaided hearing, and possess minimum core literacy, language, numeracy, and ICT skills

  • Learners should hold a relevant vocational and/or academic qualification at least above the level of their learners, ideally with a minimum Level 3 qualification in their area of specialism, or be a mature learner over 21 with relevant experience accepted by the delivery centre

Assessments

The qualification is assessed through coursework and is criterion referenced. The unit is internally quality assured by the centre and externally verified by OTHM, with learners required to meet all learning outcomes and assessment criteria for a pass.

  • Research Log and Research Evaluation Report covering LO1 and LO2, approximately 1000 words inclusive of a reference list of all sources accessed

  • Case Study covering LO3 and LO4, approximately 1200 words

  • 15 Minute Presentation covering LO5 and LO6 with approximately 1000 words of speaker notes

  • Pass/fail assessment based on achievement of all specified learning outcomes and assessment criteria

Successful completion of this qualification can support progression into work and practice in specialist lip-reading teaching and related educational roles where specialist knowledge and techniques are required.
