About course

The OTHM Level 4 Certificate in Learning, Development and Pedagogy is designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers in England. It is an in-service qualification with a teaching or training practice requirement and is intended to build the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed for effective practice.

This course is intended for learners who are already involved in teaching or training practice, or who wish to work as teachers or trainers and can meet the qualification's in-service requirements.

Course requirements

Learners must meet the official OTHM entry profile and be able to access teaching practice and observation opportunities required by the qualification.

  • Learners should be aged 19 or above at the beginning of the course, have minimum core literacy, language, numeracy and ICT, and hold at least a Level 3 qualification in their own area of specialism

  • Mature learners over 21 with relevant experience may be accepted by the delivery centre, and learners from non-majority English-speaking countries must provide evidence of English language competency

Assessments

All units are assessed by the centre and internally quality assured, then externally verified by OTHM. The qualification is criterion referenced and graded Pass or Fail, with evidence requirements varying by unit.

  • Coursework is the overall assessment method for the qualification

  • Formative and summative assessment are used during delivery

  • Reports, guidance reports, portfolios of evidence, project proposal, literature review, reflection report and action learning findings report are used across units

  • A minimum of three observations of practice totalling at least three hours is required, with additional observation requirements in relevant units

Progression

This qualification supports progression in teaching and training practice and provides a recognised Level 4 platform for further academic or professional development.

  • Progress to higher level study in teaching, training or education-related qualifications

  • Use the qualification to support progression within teaching or training roles

  • Build towards further specialist pedagogical or professional development

  • Gain a Level 4 award equivalent in academic terms to HNC and Year 1 of a three-year UK Bachelor's degree programme
