This qualification is intended primarily for operational police officers in senior leadership and management roles, as well as officers aspiring to strategic roles. It may also suit experienced public service professionals seeking advanced leadership development relevant to policing and public sector environments.

Course requirements

Applicants are typically expected to have an appropriate academic or professional background, together with relevant experience where applicable. Learners who are not from a majority English-speaking country must provide evidence of English language competency.

  • An honours degree in a related subject, a UK Level 6 qualification, an equivalent overseas qualification, or an alternative professional qualification with at least three years’ relevant public service work experience

  • Mature learners aged over 21 with relevant management experience may be considered, and non-majority English-speaking applicants must provide evidence of English language competency

Assessments

The qualification is assessed through coursework. Units are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM, with achievement based on meeting all specified learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

  • Internal assessment by the approved centre

  • External verification by OTHM

  • Criterion-referenced assessment against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria

  • Coursework-based reports for each unit, typically around 3500 to 4000 words

Progression

Successful completion enables learners to progress within employment, move into more senior policing or public service roles, and continue to further study. Because the qualification is Ofqual-regulated at Level 7, learners may also progress to Master’s top-up programmes with advanced standing.
